Virginia History Trails

A mobile app designed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of pivotal historical events in Virginia that continue to shape our democracy today.

Context

Virginia’s 2019 Commemoration Committee partnered with Stable|Kernel to design and develop a mobile app highlighting historical sites and stories across the state. Launched in honor of the 400th anniversary of several pivotal events from 1619, the app explores moments that continue to shape American democracy today. It offers users self-guided tours of significant locations tied to the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity.

Goal

The goal was to deliver an exceptional interactive and educational experience that encouraged users to explore and connect with Virginia’s rich history.

Discovery

Kickoff

We began by gathering requirements, listening to stakeholder goals, and deeply considering the needs of our end users. From this discovery phase, we arrived at the concept of a self-guided tour app designed to inspire users to explore Virginia’s historical sites—either by theme or geographic location. The app used location-based notifications to alert users when they were near a site and encouraged engagement through a system of badges and points.

Design Process

User Flows
and Wireframes

  • Created app maps and user flows to align the cross-functional team on content structure and navigation strategy.

  • Developed low-fidelity wireframes to validate screen content, layout, and state coverage.

  • Built a high-fidelity, tappable prototype for stakeholder and user testing, gathering insights that informed improvements to the location-based and thematic search experience.

Outcome

The app received multiple national awards for its innovative approach, becoming the first of its kind to showcase a state's history through 21st-century technology. As a result, the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, was recognized as the first digital commemoration in history.

Following the 2019 celebration, the state rebranded the app with its iconic "Virginia is for Lovers" theme, continuing to support it as a key resource for education and tourism.
