Virginia History Trails
Virginia History Trails app commemorates the 400th anniversary of several key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today. Background
Tasked with creating a digital historical catalogue for historical sites & stories throughout Virginia, the state of Virginia’s 2019 Commemoration Committee, engaged s|k to design and build its mobile apps. The goal was to provide users with an interactive, educational experience to facilitate the exploration of Virginia.
Approach
Initially we gathered requirements, heard stakeholder’s desires, and thought a lot about our end users. We landed on creating a self-guided tour app that would move users to visit various sites and interact with Virginia history either by theme or by location. Users were notified when in close proximity to a historical site and incentivized by earning badges and points.
Creating app maps and user flows enabled the multi-disciplined team to agree on content placement and navigation.
Refining Wireframes
Moving on to higher fidelity wireframes, I then created a tappable prototype to test with stakeholders and users. We were able to gain valuable insight into how our users moved through the application which helped the team refine the location based and thematic search functionality.
